A family owned business born in July 1971

Prior to the shop opening any keen dancers in the Tunbridge Wells area had to travel to London or Brighton to buy anything to do with ballet.

Formerly a public house called the Wiltshire Arms, after its closure it was divided up into retail shops providing a central venue for the Dancing Boutique.

Soon the word began to spread and we found ourselves servicing all the local dancing schools, and as the business grew year on year, so did the stock and the staff. We became known for our expertise in shoe fitting and uniform supply, servicing local schools in Kent, East Sussex as well as further afield.

One of our great strengths is that we will visit schools, supplying them with their specific uniforms. This service helps the parents, the teachers and the pupils to keep continuity of the uniforms and ensures proper fitting.

For some of our larger schools we are able to offer them a commission structure or sponsorship for a particular child’s lessons or uniform.

We service numerous schools, covering the whole country including clients in London, Birmingham, Tring, Maidstone, Folkestone and Eastbourne.

To successfully operate Dancing Boutique we rely on the dedication and knowledge of our loyal and long serving staff. All the staff share our interest and passion for what we do.

One of our larger clients is a professional vocational School, Elmhurst School for Dance in Birmingham. This vocational Ballet School is second only to the Royal Ballet School. It is linked to Birmingham Royal Ballet. It has over 200 pupils of both sexes, and their entire uniform was designed exclusively by myself, with each year having a specific colour so the fabrics are dyed specially.

We also look after the uniform for Tring Park School of Performing Arts, where children train from 8 years of age in all dance and musical theatre disciplines, a great many of them appearing in West End theatres.

These large schools are visited every other week by two staff ensuring all their current uniform and dance supplies are met, whether that’s special garments for a practical assessment, exam or new point shoes for a performance.

It’s very rewarding to look after a child from 5 to adulthood where he or she may end up on a West End stage. Currently many of our customers are appearing in musical such as Billy Elliot, Matilda, Mama Mia etc.

As well as uniforms our stock caters for all trends and disciplines – including gymnastics since the impact of the Olympics in 2012 and also social dancing shoes for men and women, following the popularity of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.

THE DANCING BOUTIQUE prides itself on the service we offer. All our staff are fully trained and we are supported by all the main global brands, as well as smaller manufacturers which allows us to design all uniforms at competitive prices. We are now able to make the full range of our stock available to you via our website.

We support our local annual dance festival, at the Assembly Hall Theatre where over 2000 dancers will pass through. We are able to make costumes for various groups, including tutus and national costumes.
